Sorbus aria Magnifica Whitebeam
Sorbus aria Magnifica, a German cultivar of the plant more commonly known as Whitebeam, is a broadly columnar tree with large, glossy leaves and clusters of cream flowers, followed by red berries. Sturdy and resilient, this long-lived tree is a perfect choice for avenue planting or urban gardens.
After a dormant winter, Sorbus aria Magnifica Whitebeam comes to life. Broad, ovate leaves in dark green with white-felted underside emerge on the branches in the spring, followed by corymbs of creamy-white blossoms. The flowers are melliferous and attract pollinators. In the autumn, the dense foliage turns to warm yellow shades, and the flowers are replaced by an abundance of red berries.
Tolerant of atmospheric pollution and drought-resistant once mature, this deciduous European native is undemanding and fully adaptable to the urban environment. It will tolerate any type of soil, as long as it is well-drained, and will thrive in full sun to partial shade. The Magnifica variety of Whitebeam is especially prized for its ability to flourish when planted close to hard surfaces such as pavements and concrete, which is rarely the case with ornamental trees. This medium-sized tree can be 8 to 15 metres high when mature, with a 4 to 8 metres wide crown. The naturally mounded form of Sorbus aria Magnifica requires no routine pruning.
Fully hardy in all of UK, Whitebeam is resistant to frost and can survive temperatures as low as -20 degrees. Quite resilient and easy to care for, the Magnifica cultivar has a longer-lasting foliage than other Sorbus aria varieties and isn’t susceptible to early leaf drop.
Ideal for coastal gardens, dense foliage of Sorbus aria Magnifica Whitebeam will provide a windbreak when planted en masse. The long-lasting foliage can also provide summer shade in gardens, patios or front yards. Equally striking when in bloom and when laden with red berries, this medium-sized tree is a great choice for a specimen plant, especially for smaller gardens.
