The sorbus family of trees, commonly known as the rowan or mountain ash, is a large and horticulturally significant genus, grown mainly for their ornamental foliage, colourful fruit and excellent autumn colour.
This variety, Sorbus Dodong or the Korean Mountain Ash has East Asian origins, more specifically the mountainous South Korean Island of Ulleungdo. There, a Swedish-Danish expedition collected the precious seed in the mid-seventies and named this Sorbus variety after the Island’s port – Dodong.
Sorbus Dodong is a small tree with a distinct columnar habit when young, broadening as it matures. It produces decorative grey winter buds that are pointed and sticky. White flowers are produced in spring. The foliage is large & pinnate with 11-15 pointed slender serrated leaflets. These are very bright glossy green in colour. The leaves colour richly in autumn to tones of fiery orange and deep red. Also in autumn, plump, pear-shaped berry-like fruits in orange-red are produced in large colourful bunches.
This is a highly decorative tree particularly in autumn. It has the added advantage that the very attractive decorative berries provide much needed winter food for the birds.
The full botanical name of this variety of mountain ash is Sorbus Ulleungensis Dodong synonymous with Sorbus Commixta Dodong.
