Robinia Pseudoacacia Bessoniana or False Acacia Bessoniana
Robinia Pseudoacacia Bessoniana is a deciduous tree that belongs to family more commonly known as False Acacia or Black Locust. Although its close relatives are large, thorny trees, prized for their oriental appearance, this particular variety is more compact and entirely without thorns, and therefore, more popular, primarily as a street tree. The Robinia Bessoniana cultivars we offer for sale are formed and shaped as standard trees.
The feathery green foliage emerges late in the spring, each of the pinnate leaves comprised of up to 23 lanceolate leaflets. The finely-textured canopy serves as a lovely backdrop to a profusion of fragrant blossoms that appear late in June. Adorning the tree's crown, Bessoniana's flowers are borne in long racemes, completely white except the yellow splash at their base. In autumn, the foliage turns to a golden-yellow colour, and the blossoms are replaced by long, smooth, brownish seed pods.
Height and Spread of Robinia Pseudoacacia Bessoniana
With an upright, broad habit, False Acacia Bessoniana can achieve a maximum height of 7 to 12 metres.
How Hardy Is Robinia Pseudoacacia Bessoniana
Black Locust trees are native to North America, and, as such, used to harsh conditions. Robinia Bessoniana variety is fully hardy in the United Kingdom, and it can survive even if the temperatures drop to 20 degrees below zero. Vigorous and robust, this deciduous cultivar is considered to be pest and disease free.
How To Use Robinia Pseudoacacia Bessoniana
Adaptable and highly decorative, False Acacia Bessoniana will seamlessly fit in in any landscape. As the lush, feathery foliage makes an excellent filtered shade, and the pleasant scent of the summer bloom is always welcome, this lovely tree can be planted near a patio. With multiple seasons of interest, Robinia Bessoniana will serve as a great focal point in your garden. Since it is quite resilient and tolerant of urban pollution, it is an ideal candidate for street planting.
How To Care For Robinia Pseudoacacia Bessoniana
False Acacia Bessoniana will thrive in any moist but well-drained soil, as long as it is planted in a spot in full sun. Reasonably undemanding, this flowering ornamental tree requires regular pruning, as it tends to spread. To prevent this, routinely remove its suckers.
Striking appearance and resilient nature of Robinia Bessoniana are responsible for this variety’s popularity. As a thornless acacia cultivar with a more compact size, this tree will be a magnificent addition to your lawn, garden or street.
