This evergreen shrub has glossy leaves which are a dark red when they first emerge, a striking contrast with the mature dark green foliage which persists all through the year. Flattened clusters of white flowers in mid and late spring add to the picture and attract bees and butterflies to your garden. The foliage retains its rich green colour throughout the winter, unless exposed to frost, when the foliage will turn red for a bright accent in a cold winter! Photinia Cracklin' Red forms a natural rounded shape.

How to Use Photinia Fraseri Cracklin' Red
Like other Photinia x Fraseri cultivars, Photinia Fraseri Cracklin' Red is a great choice for a low-maintenance hedge with year-round foliage. Cracklin' Red is compact and won’t become overly large – it is very suitable for medium sized hedging. Such a hedge can be planted in exposed locations as a windbreak for more delicate plants, or used as a foundation planting, as it will never grow too large for the location. One specimen would make a good container plant for a roof terrace or a balcony, providing year-round colour and privacy.
Photinia Cracklin' Red also makes a good shrub for a mixed border, where its evergreen foliage will provide winter interest.
How to Care for Photinia Fraseri Cracklin' Red
Plant Photinia Cracklin' Red in full sun or partial shade in an exposed or sheltered position in moist but well-drained or well-drained sand clay or loam soil with an acid to neutral pH. Tolerant of aerosol salt, Photinia Fraseri Cracklin' Red will do well in coastal regions, and as it also tolerates urban pollution, will do well in even inner city locations. Rabbit and deer-resistant, it can be planted on country properties without special protection. Its natural compact form requires little or no pruning, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice.
Photinia Fraseri Cracklin' Red is an easy-to-grow evergreen shrub with striking foliage and little pruning or maintenance required. In other words, it is an excellent hedging plant for the UK gardener! See also Photinia Red Robin for hedging.
