It’s smothered in double pink flowers on bare branches during spring and small red fruits emerge in summer. It’s a great choice of tree for small gardens, Japanese-style gardens or sunny mixed borders.
Prunus Triloba is native to Japan and northern China, but it’s grown well in the UK for the past 100 years. The cultivar Rosenmund is a relatively new variety with its parent plant’s hardy nature, but extra special beautiful rich pink blossom. Each double bloom is large, bowl-shaped and covers its densely branched bare branches in a huge flush of spectacular colour.
Rich mid-green leaves emerge when the blossom has faded, which are paler on the underside and produce a fluttering effect in the breeze. In late summer, fertilized blossom matures into handsome red fruits that birds enjoy as the deciduous foliage turns yellow and falls for winter in a show of autumn colour.
Because Flowering Almond Rosenmund has three seasons of interest it’s perfect for smaller gardens when every inch of space has to work hard. This plant is synonymous with Prunus Triloba Korros.
Height and Spread of Prunus Triloba Rosenmund
Flowering Almond Rosenmund is slow growing and bushy. It can reach several metres in height and spread but can be trained in a more compact shape if required.
How Hardy is Prunus Triloba Rosenmund
This is a hardy shrub that can tolerate minus temperatures in winter if its roots are well drained and it receives plenty of summer sun.
How To Use Prunus Triloba Rosenmund
Cherry Almond Rosemund is a small shrub with a big impact. Its springtime blossom show is second to none, and its summer display of fluttering two-tone foliage with red fruits is equally handsome. Use it as a specimen shrub, as part of a mixed border in Japanese or country-style gardens, or as a standalone feature in an urban courtyard. A swathe along a wall-side border is hard to beat. It’s usually grown as a bushy shrub, but it can be trained into a small tree over time or fan-trained against a wall.
This beautiful shrub will also thrive in a well-watered and fed container. It’s a must for blossom lovers and an excellent housewarming gift.
How to Care for Prunus Triloba Rosenmund
Despite its spectacular blossom and foliage displays, Flowering Almond Rosenmund needs very little care.
Plant it in full sun to partial shade in well-drained fertile soil and it will grow without fuss. A sheltered spot is best to preserve the blossom. Cover the roots in well-rotted organic matter each spring and prune back old flowering shoots after flowering.
