Photinia Crunchy Full Standard is a standard-shaped evergreen photinia with coppery-brown serrated leaves and excellent disease resistance. Clear Stem or Standard Trees are trained over time to have a long, elegant clear stem with a rounded crown of foliage on top. Standard trees are often used in smaller gardens as it's relatively easy to keep the crown of the tree to a manageable size.
Photinias are native to Asia and North America. The cultivar Photinia Crunchy was bred by Jean-Pierre Faure in France for its serrated leaf edges and chocolate brown coppery bronze foliage. Crunchy is similar to the ever-popular Photinia Red Robin but it has deeper colours and interesting foliage shapes. Its leaves are, shiny, bright, finely toothed at the margin, and as crunchy as its name implies. In spring new bronze-red foliage glows on copper stems and matures across summer to deeper shades of rich brown. In autumn its leaves remain in place and darken to purple-brown. Small fragrant white flowers appear in late spring on its well-branched form attracting bees and butterflies in abundance.
This is an excellent evergreen standard tree that’s just as good as Red Robin (also available as a standard tree shape), but deeper in tone with interesting crunchy serrated leaves.
Height And Spread Of Photinia Serratifolia Crunchy Full Standard
This full standard Photinia is shaped into a clear stemmed tree with a bush of foliage on top. It can be kept to size with a yearly trim and usually reaches two metres in height.
How Hardy Is Photinia Serratifolia Crunchy Full Standard
Photinia Crunchy Full Standard is hardy down to sub-zero temperatures if it has well-drained roots. It’s particularly resistant to disease and copes with some drought, but harsh drying winds can damage its foliage.
How To Use Photinia Serratifolia Crunchy Full Standard
This full standard is an eye-catching specimen tree in a border or on either side of a feature such as a garden path or pergola where it attracts pollinators and brings a cheerful pop of rich colour all year round. Alternatively, plant a row to create a privacy screen above the fence line or hedge. We also have Photinia Crunchy as a hedging bush.
Photinia will grow in a well-fed and watered container to brighten up a deck, patio, or balcony throughout the year too.
How To Care For Photinia Serratifolia Crunchy Full Standard
Photinia Crunchy Full Standard does best in full sun or partial shade with well-drained moist soil of any pH. It can withstand exposed areas, but cold, drying winds will scorch its foliage leading to unattractive dead areas. A sheltered spot will bring out its rich velvety brown shades and pretty white spring flowers.
Water it well until you see new growth and apply a thick layer of organic mulch to its roots in early spring to trap moisture and provide nutrients for the growing year.
Container-grown photinia needs regular fertiliser and adequate drainage, so raise it on feet and be sure to weigh it down in high winds.
