Photinia Fraseri Pink Marble Standard Tree
Photinia Fraseri Pink Marble is an eye-catching evergreen beauty. These trees have been grown and shaped as full standard trees. Standard Trees are a form of topiary where trees are trained to grow long clear stems with a mop of foliage on top. This formal standard shape makes a dramatic singular garden specimen or it can be grown side by side to create a privacy screen utilizing pleaching or a stilted hedge method. It also forms a successful espaliered-style hedge against a wall or fence. A variation of the Photinia Red Robin, Photinia Pink Marble was awarded the prestigious RHS AGM award.
An evergreen, Photinia Fraseri Pink Marble trees feature unusual marble-shaded leaves that emerge during the spring months in shades of brilliant glossy red with soft pink outlining. The leaves are lance-shaped with a serrated margin. During mid to late spring, clusters of fragrant white blossoms appear at the ends of the tree’s limbs. The flower clusters open from the outside inward. The pure white of the blooms stands out in stark contrast to the tree’s bright, colourful foliage.
When summer arrives and the Pink Marble foliage starts to mature, its colour changes to a glossy green with ivory margins. Although, the leaves do still boast occasional colour splashes of pink or red against the green and white. Such visual tones attract attention and truly give Photinia Fraseri Pink Marble a fascinating marbled effect. Following flowering, small berries are produced on the tree that ripen to a bright apple red. The fruit persists on the tree into the autumn and winter months. They are a favourite food source for small birds and other woodland creatures.
In autumn, Photinia Pink Marble foliage once again undergoes a further colour metamorphosis and takes on a reddish bronze shading. When winter arrives, the foliage changes yet again to a dark burgundy.
Plant your Photinia Pink Marble standard tree in a location that provides full sun or partial shade. In areas with exceptionally hot summers, the tree enjoys a planting site that provides afternoon shade.
The Photinia Fraseri Pink Marble tree is exceptionally hardy and will tolerate most well-draining soil. Ideally, the soil should be slightly acidic for optimum growth. During the first year after planting, keep the soil around the tree moderately moist to help it develop a strong, healthy root system. Once established, it is somewhat drought tolerant.
Anyone seeking an eye-catching tree with a beautiful standard form that is sure to garner appreciation for its year-round stunning beauty won’t be disappointed with a Photinia Pink Marble Topiary Tree. Truly a tree for all seasons.
