Prunus Cerasifera Nigra is also known as the Cherry Plum or Myrobalan Tree. This is a beautiful spreading deciduous tree with dark purple leaves which are bright red when young. The tree is covered in profuse and pretty pink flowers in early spring time. The delicate, bowl-shaped blossoms stay on the Cherry Plum tree for weeks on end. In the autumn, the purple foliage turns to shades of deep, crimson red before it drops. The bark of the Prunus Cerasifera Nigra is purple on the youngest stems, greyish-brown and ridged on mature branches.
There is quite a lot of variation in their maximum sizes, anywhere between 6-12 metres tall, and 4-8 metres wide. Their pale pink flowers emerge in March and will last until April.
Growing Tip: Prunus Cerasifera Nigra is hardy and prefers full sun. When it comes to the soil, this deciduous tree quite adaptable. It performs best in moist, but well-drained soil, regardless of its type- this tree can even be grown successfully in chalky, clay and sandy soils. When choosing a location for planting Cherry Plum, choose a sheltered spot to prevent strong winds from blowing off the delicate spring blossoms.
Easy to care for, this low-maintenance ornamental cherry tree does not require extensive pruning or trimming to stay in perfect shape. With a spreading, upright habit and a moderate growth rate, the crown of Prunus Cerasifera Nigra starts as conical, developing to a rounded shape as it matures.
Able to withstand severe winter conditions and temperatures below -20 degrees, Cherry Plum is frost resistant and fully hardy in Britain and Ireland.
Prunus Cerasifera Nigra received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, a sure sign that it will perform well in most gardens.
Grown for its deep purple foliage and prolific display of blush pink flowers in the spring, this medium-sized tree is an ideal candidate for a specimen tree. The striking foliage adds drama to the garden, contrasting the common shades of green. Since Prunus Cerasifera Nigra is fairly compact, it’s a great choice for smaller gardens in need of a feature tree. This ornamental tree can also be planted en masse, creating a stunning flowering tree border with multiple seasons of interest.
