As topiary Olive trees go, the mature Pom Pom Olive Tree is a particularly striking form and has a very special appeal. Over many years, these mature topiary olives trees have been pruned into a topiary pom pom shape and will provide a unique focal point and instant architectural interest in the garden or terrace.
Olive trees are native to the Mediterranean, but have been grown in the UK since Roman times. The Pom Pom Olive Tree is noted for the beauty of its shape, with dense balls of silvery green leaves at the end of several strong, gnarled stems.
These topiary olive trees will resist frost up to -10C, and in fact need 3 months of cold to flower and fruit. However, these Pom Pom Olive Trees are primarily grown as a topiary specimen and their value is decorative rather than being prized for their fruit. These mature trees, 2-2.5 metres tall, are already large enough to have an instant impact and a healthy olive tree’s life can be measured in centuries! Their unique shape can be maintained with one pruning a year in the spring.
These frost-tender plants are best grown in a container which can be moved into a conservatory or greenhouse for the coldest months, or in a very sheltered, sunny position. However, they will tolerate some wind because of their compact growth. Your Pom Pom Olive Tree must be planted in well-drained soil, and if planted in the ground will survive drought conditions very well. If grown in a container, make sure that the earth never completely dries out. They will not tolerate wet soil, especially in winter. Feed once a month during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer or quality compost. In colder regions, be prepared to protect your Olive Tree Topiary during winter if it is planted in the ground to prevent frost damage.
This sculptural topiary will bring a strong design element to wherever you locate it in your garden. Topiary Olive Trees are a great choice for planting in a container, as the roots remain small. You will not have to move your Pom Pom Olive Tree to a larger pot for many years! Place your potted topiary on a rooftop terrace or patio for a stunning focal point. Planted in the ground, preferably with a south-facing aspect, it would look striking against a brick or stone wall. The Pom Pom Olive Tree makes an excellent addition to a Mediterranean garden, along with such plants as lavender, rosemary and thyme.
The Pom Pom Olive Tree is a unique and beautiful sculptural topiary tree which will be treasured for many decades, if not centuries, to come. Take advantage of this opportunity to bring a classic Mediterranean touch to your garden! See also Olive Trees Bonsai Shaped and Full Standard Olive Trees.
