Prunus Pandora is a small, deciduous cherry tree with a showy spring interest. Treasured for its masses of pale pink blossoms and colour changing foliage, Cherry Pandora is ideally suited to be grown as a specimen plant.
Similar to most cherry varieties, Prunus Pandora variety is at its best during spring. The profusion of small, pale pink flowers, and the young foliage that unfolds as bronze, truly look stunning in the landscape. As the summer approaches and the blossoms drop, leaves mature to a dark green, before they turn to glowing shades of red and orange in the autumn. The lustrous brown bark offers interest during winter. Cherry Pandora does produce small fruits but they are inedible and mostly inconspicuous.
Undemanding and adaptable, Prunus Pandora can be successfully grown in a variety of soils. It prefers moderately fertile soils and needs a spot in full sun to thrive. Although it can be grown in both exposed and sheltered locations, in areas where strong winds are common, the delicate spring blossoms will appreciate protection.
Fully hardy in the United Kingdom, this Cherry is not bothered by frost or low winter temperatures. A hybrid of Prunus subhirtella 'Ascendens Rosea' and Prunus yedoensis, Cherry Pandora exhibits exceptional qualities. Its good constitution and attractive appearance have been awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
As a Multi Stem Cherry tree, this cultivar is upright while still young, adopting a spreading habit as it matures. The maximum height of the tree is 10 metres, with a maximum spread of 4 to 8 metres. Easy to care for, Cherry Pandora needs only routine removal of dead and damaged growth to stay in optimal shape.
With a floriferous display of cup-shaped blossoms and a foliage that has a lovely colour throughout the seasons, Prunus Pandora is an ideal candidate for a focus of interest in the garden. In mixed shrub borders, this lovely variety adds spring interest and a touch of elegance, especially if paired with evergreen cultivars. When planted en masse, this Multi Stem Cherry makes a showy screen or a hedge.
