Pleached Eucalyptus is an RHS Award of Garden Merit evergreen eucalyptus with round silver-blue leaves. It’s a good choice for above fence screening.
Eucalyptus gunnii is native to Tasmania, but it grows strongly here in the UK. It’s a quickly growing evergreen with a vigorous root system and distinctive round blue silver leaves. These young leaves mature to a blue-green sickle shape over the year, and in summer small clusters of cream flowers attract bees. Eucalyptus bark is attractive because its outer layer of cream bark peels away to reveal a brown layer beneath – an excellent feature on a pleached tree.
Pleached trees have a single clear stem and a crown trained on a square framework. As the tree grows you should tie in new growth and trim back to maintain the shape. Pleached trees are excellent for privacy and noise reduction as the crown sits above a fence line.
Height And Spread of Pleached Eucalyptus
Left to its own devices, Eucalyptus can grow to a height of more than 12 meters and a spread of more than 8 metres in less than 20 years. You can easily keep it pruned to the sie you want.
How Hardy Is Pleached Eucalyptus
Pleached eucalyptus is hardy in the UK down to sub-zero temperatures if the roots are well-drained. It can cope with some drought and is rarely bothered by pests.
How To Use Pleached Eucalyptus
Pleached Eucalyptus is an excellent choice for evergreen above fence line screening. Its dense, silvery foliage blocks overlooking views all year round and it’s thick enough to dampen road noise when planted near traffic.
Pleached Eucalyptus is attractive all around the garden. It’s particularly suitable for exotic-style gardens.
Use it to disguise an ugly shed or surround a gazebo or seating area. The peeling bark and silvery leaves mean there’s always something attractive to look at.
How To Care For Pleached Eucalyptus
Pleached Eucalyptus will grow in the majority of spots including chalk and soils that drain poorly. It prefers a sunny, sheltered position and will quickly fill out to create a privacy screen.
To maintain its size and shape you will need to prune regularly. The new growth of whippy branches can be tied to the square framework and trimmed to maintain its pleached shape. Eucalyptus is a fast grower, so it’s best to keep it pruned regularly.
Mulch the roots and water well until established.
