Renowned for its exceptional hardiness, Phyllostachys Glauca is a fast growing, decorative bamboo variety. Named for the silver-blue waxy coating on young canes, this evergreen bamboo cultivar is a great choice for coastal gardens as it tolerates strong, cold winds. It is ideal for use as a windbreak or for tall evergreen sceening. Offering multiple seasons of interest, the bright green canes start out tinged with blue and silver. The combination of the new growth and established culms creates a brilliant display of colours. The lanceolate, narrow leaves with a glaucous underside create a rich, dense foliage that stays on the canes throughout the year.
With similar preferences to its Phyllostachys relatives, Phyllostachys Glauca thrives in fertile, humus-rich soil with adequate moisture and drainage. Although quite large, it can be planted in a container, as long as the soil in the pot is enriched with liquid fertiliser. It performs well in both dappled shade and full sun. As it doesn’t mind strong winds or exposed locations, this evergreen bamboo variety is a great choice for coastal gardens.
Naturally occurring in China, Phyllostachys Glauca is one of the most robust bamboo varieties. Fully hardy in Britain and Ireland, this evergreen cultivar has tough leaves and canes that can survive temperatures up to -20 degrees. It’s also resistant to frost and won’t need sheltering. Easy to grow and to care for, this variety of Phyllostachys is considered pest and disease free.
Tough and vigorous, this evergreen bamboo has an upright, spreading habit, and forms an open grove as it matures. Even though it’s not considered invasive, in optimal conditions Phyllostachys Glauca tends to grow enthusiastically. If you want to prevent it from spreading, consider using a bamboo barrier. With a fast growth rate, this bamboo variety can be up to 8 metres tall when fully established.
Renowned as one of the most robust bamboo varieties, Phyllostachys Glauca is a perfect candidate for evergreen screening. Its tolerance of strong, biting winds makes it a favourite in exposed coastal gardens where it can serve as a windbreak. The dense, evergreen foliage and bluish-green canes add colour and texture to the garden, especially in dull, winter months.
