Picea Glauca Alberta Globe is an RHS AGM-winning evergreen conifer that only reaches half a metre in height and spread. This is a tough but handsome dwarf conifer spruce for rockeries, mixed borders and year-round colour.
Picea Glauca is a north American and Canadian native that grows in colder regions. It’s commonly known as White Spruce or Canadian Spruce. This cultivar Picea Glauca Alberta Globe was bred in 1967 in the Netherlands to take advantage of Picea Glauca’s tough nature, but create a smaller, more garden-friendly version.
Alberta Globe is a rounded, mound-shaped dwarf conifer shrub with short stubby mid-green needles. It’s a mainstay for rockeries and foliage gardens because it’s handsome but virtually maintenance-free and doesn’t get too big.
It’s synonymous with Picea Glauce Globe and Picea Glauca Albertina Globe.
Height and Spread of Picea Glauca Alberta Globe
This dwarf conifer is slow growing. It reaches just 40 by 60 centimetres in 10 years.
How Hardy is Picea Glauca Alberta Globe
It’s cold hardy and copes with drought once established. Alberta Globe is a tough evergreen that tolerates UK winters in free-draining soil.
How To Use Picea Glauca Alberta Globe
Canadian Spruce are valuable evergreens in a variety of gardens.
They suit foliage borders and provide a year-round colourful structure in flower borders. Rockeries, Japanese-style gardens and slopes benefit from Alberta Globe’s low-growing burst of green, and wildlife utilises its dense branches for shelter. They fill front gardens and difficult-to-access areas with lively low maintenance colour.
Due to its small stature, Alberta Globe is a first-class container shrub that adds a bright green dome to dull decks, patios, and balconies during all months of the year.
How to Care for Picea Glauca Alberta Globe
White Spruce Alberta Globe requires very little attention and it’s easy to grow. Choose a well-drained spot in full sun and it will thrive.
Pruning isn’t required, but you can maintain its size and shape with a yearly trim if needed. Water it well until established and raise containers on feet for adequate drainage. Adding a thick layer of organic mulch in spring will help maintain foliage colour and provide nutrients for the growing season.
