Pleached Acacia Dealbata is an evergreen tree with fluffy yellow pompom flowers. In pleached tree form, it creates excellent above fence line screening and pollinator-friendly privacy screens.
Acacia Dealbata is better known as Mimosa. It’s a native of Tasmania but grows well here in the UK provided it has a warm, shedltered spot. The RHS has awarded it the AGM and the Perfect for Pollinators badge. Pleached mimosa has fern-like grey-green foliage that’s feathered and highly tactile. New foliage grows a slightly paler shade of green before maturing to match the previous growth, but it’s best known for dramatic fluffy yellow ball flowers that bloom roughly February to April. Pompom flowers appear on branch tips and are so scented they stop passers-by and attract lots of early-waking pollinators.
Thes Mimosa specimens are in pleached form. Pleached trees have a single clear stem and a crown trained on a square framework. As the tree grows you should tie in new growth and trim it back to maintain the shape.
Evergreen pleached trees are excellent for privacy and noise reduction as the crown sits above a fence line.
Height And Spread of Pleached Acacia Dealbata
Acacia Dealbata can reach heights of ten metres, but can be kept smaller with regular pruning.
How Hardy Is Pleached Acacia Dealbata
Pleached mimosa is best suited to the warmer areas of the UK such as coastal towns. It does not like cold, drying winds. Avoid frost pockets and exposed locations. Mimosa tolerates drought once established and rarely attracts pests.
How To Use Pleached Acacia Dealbata
Pleached Mimosa is an excellent choice for evergreen above fence line screening in the south of the UK to midlands. It creates a bright burst of yellow after a dull winter.
The tactile fluffy foliage is evergreen so it blocks overlooking views all year round and it’s thick enough to dampen road noise when planted near traffic. It’s particularly suitable for exotic and tropical-style gardens.
Its pollinator-friendly flowers make it a great choice for wildlife-friendly gardens in need of privacy and shade.
The fluffy foliage and pompom flowers mean there’s always something to look at if you want to disguise an ugly shed or surround a gazebo or seating area.
How To Care for Pleached Acacia Dealbata
Pleached mimosa does best in full sun in a warm area of the UK where it will flower reliably. It likes neutral to acidic well-drained soil.
To maintain the pleached crown you will need to prune regularly. The new whippy branches can be tied to the square framework and trimmed to maintain the shape at the end of the flowering season. It’s best to do this yearly, as cutting into old wood can damage the tree and prevent flowering.
Apply a thick layer of mulch to the roots in early spring and water well until established.
