Pleached Acer Platanoides or Norway Maple is a deciduous maple tree in pleached tree form with exceptional autumnal colour. It’s a good choice for above the fence line hedging and privacy screens.
This is a pleached form Norway Maple, so it has a single clear stem or trunk and its crown is trained on a square bamboo frame.
Acer Platanoides is better known as the Norway Maple. It’s native to western Asia and east to central Europe but has grown in the UK for centuries. In early spring, racemes of small yellow flowers appear on bare branches. These flowers are sweetly scented and attract early waking pollinators. The RHS has awarded Norway Maple the Perfect for Pollinators badge for these attractive early blooms.
Following the flowers, large five-lobed foliage emerges in bright green before maturing to deep rich shades over summer. As autumnal months approach, this tree really stands out. The leaves turn bright yellow, orange, and red before falling for winter.
Height And Spread of Pleached Acer Platanoides
Norway Maple can reach a height of 12 metres over 50 years. Maintain the pleached shape with an annual prune when the tree is dormant.
How Hardy Is Pleached Acer Platanoides
This is a hardy tree, capable of withstanding harsh winters if it’s planted in well-drained soil.
How To Use Pleached Acer Platanoides
Pleached Norway Maple is best used as above fence hedging to block out neighbours and dampen traffic noise. It will lose its leaves in winter, but the branches continue to provide some screening.
It’s also an excellent choice to line pathways, disguise an ugly outbuilding, or create shady privacy screens to section off garden spaces.
How To Care For Pleached Acer Platanoides
Norway Maple tolerates all soil types including chalky soils as long as it’s well-drained. It can tolerate exposed areas, but will hold onto its vivid autumnal colour longer in sheltered positions.
Plant it in a sunny to partially sunny spot and water well until established. Lack of water is the number one reason newly planted trees fail. Mulch well around the roots in early spring.
This pleached tree has a square crown that’s been trained on a framework. To keep its shape a yearly prune is required. Tie in whippy stems and trim away excess to maintain the shape. There’s no need to remove the bamboo frame.
