Acer Campestre, more commonly referred to as Field Maple, is a deciduous tree best known for its good autumn colour and distinct foliage. Although we do offer standard Field Maple in pots, these particular plants are sold root balled and pleached, making them ideal for above fence screening (also known as pleached hedging or stilted hedging).

As these Pleached Field Maple specimens are sold as root balls, they are ready for mass planting as soon as they are delivered. The biodegradable sack and mesh protect the root system and make for a safe and easy transplanting of semi-mature plants. Since they are not containerised, root balled plants offer great value for the money and allow you to quickly form a pleached hedge without straining your budget.

As this is the only maple tree variety that is native to the United Kingdom, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Acer Campestre Pleached trees are fully hardy. Its stunning features and exceptional robustness have been recognized by the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society, which awarded this UK native maple the Award of Garden Merit.

Pleached Field Maple has a raised square crown above a straight bare trunk, a distinct, traditional look that’s enhanced by its recognizable foliage. The 5-lobed leaves start out green in the spring, turning to warm shades of red, yellow and orange in the autumn. The density of the foliage makes this maple variety a great choice for screening, as it offers both privacy and shade.

Undemanding and adaptable, Pleached Field Maple will thrive in any fertile, moist, but well-drained soil. It tolerates both full sun and partial shade. When planting your root balled pleached tree, make sure that you dig a hole that is two times bigger than the tree’s roots and enriched with compost. For best appearance, Acer Campestre Pleached trees should be planted immediately next to each other.  The planting distance would be the width of the frame.

When it comes to maintenance, Acer Campestre Pleached trees are easy to care for.  A trim once a year will keep your pleached maple tree in perfect shape, and ensure its architectural form stays impeccable. Just remove any unwanted shoots, or, if you want to keep some of the young growth, tie down new shoots to the frame with a twine until it matures.
