Originating from China Phyllostachys Aurea Koi, also known as Golden Koi Bamboo, is a particularly desirable striped-cane bamboo. Golden Koi Bamboo canes, also known as culms, turn a golden yellow but they also develop a particular pleasing stripe of pale green around the sulcus – the groove of the cane. This stand-out feature is appreciated by garden designers. These golden canes with pale green stripes are complemented by the pale green foliage that may also develop a yellow or white stripe. Overall Golden Koi Bamboo will reach a height of six metres making it a mid-sized bamboo.
How Hardy Is Phyllostachys Aurea Koi?
Phyllostachys Aurea Koi is very hardy and will withstand freezing temperatures in the UK, however it does not do well it particularly well in windy, exposed areas if the wind is consistently drying.
How To Use Phyllostachys Aurea Koi
Phyllostachys Aurea Koi makes an excellent living privacy screen and it is tall enough to shade you from overlooking neighbours. It’s also useful for breaking up a larger garden to create different areas, for example a vegetable patch, seating area or pond. It can also be used to hide an unsightly building or fence extremely quickly.
Bamboo does tend to spread via suckers, but Golden Koi Bamboo is one of the less vigorous spreaders. You can prevent all bamboo spread by using a bamboo barrier.
In large clumps Golden Koi bamboo makes a particularly attractive focal point. You can easily grow a specimen in a container provided it is watered in the hot summer months.
How To Care For Phyllostachys Aurea Koi
Grow Golden Koi bamboo in full sun or light shade. The more sun it receives the more golden the canes will become.
All bamboos like well-drained, moist soil but they cope with drought conditions very well and require little maintenance.
Pruning bamboo will expose the golden striped canes, so strip back lower leaves and cut any spindly or crossed branches down to earth level. Keeping the area beneath your canes clear of debris is neat, but in the winter months hibernating animals appreciate its warmth, so wait until spring before clearing it away if you can. ~
If you’re a lover of bamboo, Golden Koi Bamboo is sure to be a hit. Its stripy canes, fresh foliage and whispering sounds complement any garden. It’s perfect for a privacy screen and can easily be controlled with a bamboo barrier.
