Pleached Acer Campestre Elsrijk Pleached Field Maple

Pleached Acer Campestre Elsrijk is deciduous pleached field maple tree with pollution-resistant dense foliage. It creates leafy shade and its pleached form makes it ideal for above fence line hedging. This is a Pleached Elsrijk Field Maple meaning it has a single clear stem and its crown is trained on a square bamboo frame. The green foliage is small and tightly knitted, so it creates an excellent privacy screen. It’s an ideal choice for above fence line screening.

Acer Campestre is our native Field Maple found across Europe and into Asia. It’s a common sight in British hedgerows and fields. Elsrijk Field Maple is a 1953 Dutch cultivar of our native maple bred smaller with denser foliage. It has small sycamore-shaped leaves with 5 distinct lobes that start out bright green and mature to deep rich greens over the summer. It has excellent vivid autumn colour that ranges from warm yellow to fiery red. In spring, small corymb yellow-green flowers appear that are often unnoticed by us but attract plenty of pollinators.

If left to its own devices, the Elsrijk Field Maple will grow into a mid to large sized tree that will reach a height of 7-12 metres. Trim once per year to maintain the pleached shape.

This Dutch cultivar is bred using our native field maple, so it is tough and hardy enough to withstand our winters if the roots are well-drained. It tolerates pollution, salt sprays and is drought-hardy once established.

How To Use Pleached Acer Campestre Elsrijk
Pleached Elsrijk Field Maple is a perfect choice for screening in towns or near roads because it’s pollution tolerant. It also withstands winds and salt sprays in coastal gardens.
It’s best used as an above fence line screen to block out neighbours and dampen traffic noise. It will lose its leaves in winter, but the branches continue to provide some screening.
You can use our pleached trees to line pathways, disguise an ugly outbuilding, or create shady privacy screens to section off garden spaces too.

How To Care For Pleached Acer Campestre Elsrijk
Pleached Acer Campestre Elsrijk tolerates the majority of soils if it’s well-drained. It can cope with exposed areas and coastal sprays, but it will hold onto its vivid autumnal colour longer in sheltered positions.
Plant in a sunny to partially sunny spot and water well until established because underwatering is the main reason newly planted trees fail to take. Mulch well around the roots in early spring.

This pleached tree has a square crown trained on a framework. To keep its shape a yearly prune is required. There’s no need to remove the bamboo frame, simply tie in the whippy stems and trim away excess to maintain the shape.
