Osmanthus x Fortunei Carr is commonly known as False Holly, it is a large evergreen shrub with a dense growing habit that makes it the ideal choice for hedging. False Holly Hedging is in fact a great alternative to Holly, having softer foliage, it's not as prickly as Holly. A wonderful flowering hedging plant, the flowers appear in the late summer and will last right through until late autumn. False Holly has amazing small, white, highly fragrant flowers that are just adored by pollinators.These are very welcome at a time of year when flowers for pollinators are in short supply. Foliage is a beautiful green with a slightly lighter underside which gives a greenish grey appearance to the plant.
Osmanthus are part of the Oleaceae family of plants, they are very hardy down to -15 degrees in the UK but don't like cold, drying winds so make sure you don't plant them in an exposed location. This particular variety, Osmanthus x Fortunei Carr has been hybridised with Osmanthus Fragrans and has slightly larger leaves than Osmanthus Heterophyllum.
Osmanthus Fragrans has a wider spreading habit, whereas Osmanthus x Fortunei Carr is neater and creates a denser hedge, another plus if you're interested in attracting more birds into your garden.Osmanthus are very versatile hedging plants that will thrive in most areas of the garden and although usually planted in full sun they will happily grow in partial shade.
