Liriodendron Tulipifera, also known as the Tulip Tree is a fairly fast growing deciduous flowering tree. This popular decorative tree boasts a pyramidal growth habit, interesting foliage, and eye-catching blossoms. The flowers are circa 4 cm in length, bright greenish/yellow with markings of red and orange and appear on the tree in mid-summer, staying on the tree for weeks. As the name of the tree suggests, its blossoms resemble those of tulips - albeit larger.
But the striking tulip-like flowers are not this tree’s only quality. The leaves are very unusual because they have a saddle-like shape. In the autumn, the peculiar foliage becomes even more lovely as it turns to a butter-yellow.
Height and Spread of Liriodendron Tulipifera
The Tulip Tree can grow over 10 metres in height if left unchecked. Prune and shape if you want to keep the tree smaller.
How Hardy Is Liriodendron Tulipifera
The Tulip tree is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. This cultivar is also the recipient of the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, a sure sign that it will perform well in most gardens.
How To Use Liriodendron Tulipifera
This deciduous tree boasts multiple seasons of interest, from its spectacular tulip-like blossoms in the summer to distinct foliage that’s attractive both in spring and autumn, Tulip Tree leaves no one indifferent.
