Azaleas are related to Rhododendrons and are one of the most colourful of the spring flowering shrubs in the UK. With flowering continuing for several weeks during April/May/June, it’s no wonder they are one of the most popular gifts for Mother’s Day and Easter.
Azaleas have great significance in Chinese and Japanese cultures. Known in China as the ‘thinking of home’ bush, it is a very treasured gift. Many Azalea festivals take place in Japan and Korea during May with stunning displays created in natural landscape settings which attract thousands of visitors.
Azaleas have been cultivated by plants people for centuries resulting in more than 10,000 colourful cultivars. Here at Paramount we have selected our favourite Azalea Japonica varieties from each colour range.
Growing Tip: Azalea Japonica has a shallow root system so they need to be kept moist, they prefer an acidic soil and partial shade. They will tolerate full sun but ONLY if their roots are kept moist at all times. They do grow well in containers, but again, attention must be kept in terms of keep them moist as they can easily dry out when kept in pots.
