Koelreuteria Paniculata Coral Sun, also known as Pride of India Coral Sun, is a brightly coloured cultivar of Koelreuteria Paniculata. This unusual deciduous tree holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and the Perfect for Pollinators title for its garden merits. It is a dependable, easy to grow ornamental tree that fits into any sized garden.
In spring it produces bright coral-red shoots topped with pinky-red leaves. As the spring progresses the feathery leaves turn a vibrant lush green that contrasts with the red stems. Yellow flowers appear in summer in hanging panicles and attract many pollinators before turning into papery yellow seed pods. In autumn the foliage turns an orange to rival acers and witch hazels before falling with the frosts.
How Hardy Is Koelreuteria Paniculata Coral Sun
Pride of India Coral Sun is tough and hardy through most of the UK if it is grown in full sun. Despite its pretty appearance this hardy tree is also tolerant of drought and pollution.
How To Use Koelreuteria Paniculata Coral Sun
This ornamental tree is best used as a statement tree in the border or in the lawn. It will grow to an ultimate height of 8-12 metres so it does need some room to grow, however this growth takes place over 20-50 years and you can keep it smaller with regular pruning.
When it is grown in the border Pride of India Coral Sun makes an attractive display with plenty of height and wildlife friendly attributes, it is a real eye-catcher for smaller spaces.
You can also grow it as a shrub or tree in a large well-watered container on your patio which will restrict its height. When pruned hard on alternate years it will grow as an attractive pollarded bush.
How To Care For Koelreuteria Paniculata Coral Sun
Little care and maintenance is needed by this tolerant ornamental tree. It will grow in all soils and is drought tolerant and hardy. It will take some exposure to wind, but the best colours are displayed when it is planted in a sunny, sheltered spot and given plenty of organic matter to boost its health. If you have a compact space or a patio, this deciduous ornamental tree is a great choice because it remains slender but has plenty of height. It is easy to care for, and the stunning colours are a joy to watch as seasons change.
Pride of India Coral Sun is a top RHS endorsed choice for gardeners who want something bright and unusual but are short on time.
