Koelreuteria Paniculata more commonly known as Pride of India Tree or Golden Rain Tree, is an elegant, mid-sized deciduous tree. Best known for its prolific display of flowers and the seed pods that follow them, this eye-catching cultivar is an ideal candidate for a specimen tree. In spring, the bronze, pinnate leaves unfold, creating a dense, rounded crown. The leaves change colour throughout the seasons before they drop, going through various shades of green, yellow, and orange. In the autumn, this tree looks particularly striking, with its foliage in warm hues of gold and copper. During the summer months, Pride of India Tree is completely engulfed with masses of tiny, bright yellow blossoms borne in panicles. The flowers are followed by bronze-brown seed pods, similar in shape to Chinese lanterns.
Apart from being highly-decorative, the blossoms also provide pollen and nectar for bees, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators. This cultivar is the recipient of the RHS Perfect for Pollinators badge.
Adaptable and easy to care for, Koelreuteria Paniculata fares well in wide range of soils, as long as they are well drained. This cultivar thrives in full sun and both exposed and sheltered locations. City pollution and drought resistant.
Native to East Asia, Pride of India Tree is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. This ornamental tree will have a good performance in the garden even if the temperatures drop to 15 degrees below zero. Considered disease and pest free, this cultivar is virtually indestructible. With a spreading habit, this decorative tree forms a lovely rounded crown as it grows. Being medium-sized and long-lived, Pride of India Tree can achieve a maximum height of 12 metres in a period of 20 to 50 years and requires no routine pruning to keep its elegant form.
Offering interest for the better part of the year, Koelreuteria Paniculata makes an excellent choice for a specimen tree. Whether it is its extraordinary autumn colour, masses of bright blossoms, or the attractive seed pods, this ornamental deciduous tree is bound to be in the center of attention. To complement its showy features, underplant it with shade-loving shrubs or perennials.
