Juniperus Horizontalis Golden Carpet is an evergreen conifer with plume-like foliage. As its name suggests it creeps horizontally to cover up to almost two metres of bare earth, and will make its way around existing shrubs without disturbing their roots. It will grow no taller than 30 centimetres in height. Its foliage colour is a most attractive golden green.
The RHS has given Golden Carpet Creeping Juniper the Award of Garden Merit for its benefits in the garden.
How Hardy Is Juniperus Horizontalis Golden Carpet?
Once established Golden Carpet Creeping Juniper is extremely hardy surviving frosts, snow and exposed winds. It is also drought tolerant and will grow in dry, chalky and sandy soils.
Like most plants creeping juniper golden carpet will not thrive in water-logged conditions as the roots will rot. It prefers free-draining, moist or dry soil, but will accept the majority of other conditions.
How To Use Juniperus Horizontalis Golden Carpet
Golden Carpet Creeping Juniper is usually used as spectacular ground cover. It grows prostate, almost flat to the ground, covering large areas of dry bare earth and providing habitats for a multitude of wildlife. It looks attractive at the front of a wide flower border.
Because creeping juniper gold carpet is a conifer, it holds a pleasing shape and provides firm structure at ground level. The bright foliage lightens up darker corners providing much needed winter colour too. If you use creeping juniper as under-planting in the summer months its foliage balances numerous summertime blooms from neighbouring shrubs.
Juniperus Horizontalis Golden Carpet excels at softening hard edges. If you have a path, driveway, or low lying wall it will cascade over the edges. Rockery gardens and alpine gardeners appreciate its firm architectural appearance which also covers banks and slopes with ease.
It’s possible to grow creeping juniper golden carpet in containers provided you can water it in hot spells. The foliage will cascade over the sides to soften a harsh patio or doorstep.
How To Care For Juniperus Horizontalis Golden Carpet
Juniperus Horizontalis Golden Carpet needs little care once it’s established and will thrive in sunny or lightly shaded areas. If you need to limit its growth, trim the excess at any time of year and remove dead or diseased branches.
If you are looking for attractive ground cover or a low maintenance way to soften patios, pathways, and other brickwork then creeping juniper golden carpet is a top buy. It’s tough nature, brightly coloured foliage and creeping habit covers bare areas with ease and provides all year round interest.
