Hoheria Sexstylosa Stardust is an RHS AGM-winning floriferous evergreen shrub or tree with masses of small white fragrant flowers in summer. It’s an excellent choice for low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly gardens.
Hoheria Sexstylosa is better known as Lacebark or Ribbonwood due to its patterned bark. It’s native to the forests of New Zealand but has grown successfully in the UK for many years. It is tall but compact on a strong framework of grey ribboned branches. The Stardust cultivar holds the RHS AGM and has small glossy evergreen leaves that set off its clouds of fragrant white flowers in mid to late summer. Its flowers are so numerous against its dark green foliage they resemble a starlit night sky hence the name Stardust. Each flower has five petals and prominent stamens much like fruit tree blossom.
Ribbonwood Stardust is a popular choice for low-maintenance borders and one of the most freely flowering of the Ribbonwood cultivars. It’s a lovely flowering evergreen with lots of versatility.
Height And Spread Hoheria Sexstylosa Stardust
Ribbonwood Stardust grows tall, but it’s tidy and compact. It reaches a maximum height of 4-8 metres and spreads over 2.5 metres.
How Hardy Is Hoheria Sexstylosa Stardust
This is a hardy evergreen in the UK if its roots are well-drained and it’s sheltered from harsh freezing winds. It tolerates full sun once established and is rarely affected by pests.
How To Use Hoheria Sexstylosa Stardust
In a sheltered garden, Ribbonwood Stardust is a magnificent flowering evergreen that brightens a wall side border all year round. Its suits urban courtyard sun traps and sunny borders in cottage-style gardens.
Its low maintenance aspects make it especially good for large spaces or busy gardeners and birds enjoy its evergreen cover.
Because it likes warmer temperatures, Ribbonwood is a good coastal plant if it has shelter from stiff breezes.
How To Care For Hoheria Sexstylosa Stardust
Ribbonwood Stardust is very easy to grow.
It prefers neutral to alkaline well-drained soil and a sunny to partially sunny spot. It also needs some shelter from freezing winds, so a sheltered east, south, or west-facing border is best.
Pruning isn’t required, but you can reduce its height and spread after flowering. Apply a thick layer of well-rotted organic mulch in spring and water well until it’s established.
