Hibiscus Syriacus China Chiffon Rose of Sharon
Hibiscus Syriacus China Chiffon is a variety that belongs to the series of Hibiscus cultivars developed by Dr. Wood, a breeder from Cambridgeshire. Others include for example Hibiscus Syriacus Lavender Chiffon or the lovely Hibiscus Syriacus White Chiffon. All the Chiffon Hibiscus varieties have elegant, semi-double flowers composed of two rows of petals. These plants are more compact growers than other varieties of hibiscus.
Prized for its elegant, semi-double white blossoms with red cenres and compact size, Hibiscus Syriacus China Chiffon is a great candidate for mixed borders. During the summer months, this highly-decorative shrub is covered with large flowers. Similar to all Chiffon cultivars, the blossoms are semi-double, 10 to 12 centimeters in size. The center of each flower is deep, burgundy red, beautifully contrasting the pure white of the petals. The deciduous foliage is mid-green, palmate, toothed leaves that can add texture to mixed borders and hedges.
Easy to grow and care for, China Chiffon Rose of Sharon can thrive in almost any spot in your garden. For best results, choose moist but well-drained soil, and full sun. This cultivar does not fare well in waterlogged soils, so make sure not to overwater it and to provide proper drainage. Fully hardy in the United Kingdom, this versatile shrub can survive even if the temperatures drop 20 degrees below zero. Even though it is frost hardy, China Chiffon Rose of Sharon will appreciate sheltering during winter.
Staying compact as it matures, Hibiscus Syriacus China Chiffon can achieve 2.5 metres in height and up to 1.5 metres in width if left unpruned. Keeping the elegant looks of this eye-catching cultivar will not require hard work, as this variety is practically maintenance-free. Apart from removing dead or damaged branches, there is not much else you will need to do. Since this shrub responds well to hard pruning, you can cut it back in the spring, to encourage even more profuse flowering.
With its refined appeal and versatile looks, China Chiffon Rose of Sharon fits in any garden. The dense, attractive foliage of this shrub make it suitable for hedges when planted en masse, or mixed shrub borders, where its foliage would be greatly appreciated. The long-lasting and striking blossoms make Hibiscus Syriacus China Chiffon even more decorative during the summer months. This plant is suitable for growing in containers, which makes it a great candidate for specimen plant on a patio, balcony or roof terrace.
