Prized for its beautiful flowers, Hibiscus Syriacus White Chiffon is a compact flowering shrub ideal for mixed borders and hedges. Offering interest for the better part of the year, this cultivar can be trained as a petite tree or grown as a bushy, rounded shrub.
White Chiffon Rose of Sharon belongs to the series of Hibiscus cultivars developed by Dr. Wood, a breeder from Cambridgeshire known as the Cihiffon collection. Like all Chiffon varieties, this showy shrub displays large, semi-double flowers up to 10 cm size. The distinct feature of this particular variety is the crisp white colour of the flowers, which consist of 5 large petals and a fluffy center of petaloid stamens. Even though each blossom lasts only for a day, the shrub will keep producing new ones from early summer right through to late autumn.
Hibiscus cultivars are well-known as undemanding shrubs, and Hibiscus Syriacus White Chiffon does not differ from its close relatives when it comes to care. This elegant shrub will happily grow in and any soil, as long as it is moist and well drained. Choose a sheltered, sunny spot in the garden when planting this cultivar. Easy to grow, White Chiffon Rose of Sharon is easy to keep in great shape, too. Virtually maintenance-free, the free-branching, upright habit of his shrub only requires routine removal of dead or damaged shoots.
Robust and tough, White Chiffon Rose of Sharon is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. This cultivar is not bothered by heat or drought, and it tolerates salt, so it is suitable for growing in coastal areas. For its timeless beauty and exceptional qualities, Hibiscus Syriacus White Chiffon was awarded with the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society. Keeping its compact size as it grows, this flowering shrub can achieve a maximum height of 2.5 metres and the width of 1.5 metres, if left untrimmed. Its size is one of the things that makes this variety suitable for growing in pots and small gardens.
Attractive, elegant flowers and a lovely habit make Hibiscus Syriacus White Chiffon a great addition to mixed shrub borders. The dense foliage and the upright habit will blend in and provide texture, and the long flowering season provides interest throughout summer and autumn. When planted en masse, this striking shrub makes for a lovely deciduous hedge.
