Hedera Colchica Sulphur Heart, also known as Ivy Sulphur Heart and Ivy Paddy’s Pride and also Persian Ivy, is a self-clinging evergreen climber valued for its variegated foliage and exceptional hardiness. Large and vigorous, this striking climber is perfect for covering walls or camouflaging bare patches of land as a ground cover plant.
The evergreen, variegated foliage of this ivy cultivar offers multiple seasons of interest. The dark green leaves with a central streak of golden yellow are ovate and quite large when compared to other Ivy varieties, reaching up to 20 centimetres in length. Fully mature specimens of this evergreen climber have insignificant, spherical, green flowers. In the winter, the inconspicuous flowers are replaced by discreet clusters of black berries, which attract birds and pollinators.
Ivy Sulphur Heart thrives in full sun to partial shade. However, to ensure that the foliage keeps its vivid, contrasting shades, plant it in a sunny location, as the colour of the leaves tends to lose its vibrancy in dimly lit spots. This vigorous climber performs best in alkaline and acidic soils that are fertile, hummus-rich and well-drained, but it is not fussy when it comes to soil type. The ideal location for Ivy Paddy’s Pride is definitely a sun-facing wall, where this large climber can spread undisturbed and a show of its spectacular golden-green foliage.
A Middle East native, Hedera Colchica Sulphur Heart is well known as a robust, tough climber. Fully hardy in Britain and Ireland (hence the nickname Paddy’s Pride), this cultivar can survive even when the temperatures drop to -15 degrees. Much more rugged than most Ivy varieties, Sulphur Heart is relatively resistant to pest and diseases. As a testimony to its good constitution, this vigorous climber received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society.
A self-clinging climber, this plant has aerial roots, that enable it to cling easily to the surface beneath it. With a quick growth rate, this vigorous climber can grow up to be 4 to 8 metres high and up to 4 metres wide in just a few years. To keep Ivy Sulphur Heart tidy and in perfect shape, occasionally trim the overgrown and unwanted shoots.
With a year-round interest and spectacular, variegated foliage, Hedera Colchica Sulphur Heart is a vigorous climber that’s ideal for hiding unseemly walls or for cottage gardens, where climbing ivy is the essential part of the charm. Hardy and highly decorative, this large leaved cultivar can be used as a ground cover plant, ideal for hiding unseemly parts of your garden.
