Hedera Colchica Dentata Variegata is a variety of evergreen climbing ivy with large, green leaves that are variegated with yellow highlights. This ivy originates from Persia and is more commonly known as Variegated Ivy Dentata.
Because Hedera Colchica Dentata Variegata is an evergreen climber, it provides year round colour to your garden. Its heart-shaped, leathery green leaves are brightly splashed with pale yellow rather than cream, and it’s self-clinging through aerial roots so no tricky trellis or wire supports are required.
Variegated Ivy Dentata is vigorous and bushy all year round and has the added benefit of producing large green-yellow flowers in October to November which late pollinators find attractive. In the late autumn it bears fruit which acts as a source of food for birds.
Dentata is a fast growing species of variegated ivy and one plant will reach a maximum height of eight metres and four in breadth. If you want thick cover try planting several near one another.
How Hardy is Hedera Colchica Dentata Variegata?
Hedera Colchica Dentata Variegata is full hardy in any soil once established. Young plants appreciate water in the summer months.
How To Use Hedera Colchica Dentata Variegata
Ivy is a great cost effective way to cover an unsightly wall, fence, shed or tree and because the foliage is brighter than other ivies, it’s a good choice for dark corners where you need some brightness. Hedera Colchica Dentata Variegata is a good ground cover choice too, effectively covering large patches of stony or bare earth with ease.
How to Care for Hedera Colchica Dentata Variegata
Variegated Ivy Dentata needs little care once established. It prefers alkaline soil so is suited to areas cleared of rubble, but it will happily grow vigorously in any Ph.
If you need to keep your ivy under control you can prune it at any time of the year. Bear in mind it grows very quickly so you’ll need to do this yearly or risk the tips growing out of reach.
Grown as ground cover on banks, slopes or level ground it provides safe habitats for wildlife as well as cover for unsightly areas. Grown vertically older specimens provide safe nesting or roosting areas for birds.
Variegata Ivy Dentata has won the RHS’s Award of Garden Merit because it’s such a useful and hardy species. Appreciated by wildlife and gardeners alike, Variegated Ivy Dentata is a best buy if you need rapid easy-to-care–for cover. More Climbers....
