Hydrangea Macrophylla Music Blue Boogie Woogie is a deciduous blue flowering hydrangea shrub from the new Music Collection. Its stunning deep blue flowers bloom all summer long.
Hydrangea macrophylla are native to Japan. The name macrophylla means large or long-leaved and they grow in sheltered partially sunny positions to protect their foliage. This dark blue hydrangea is one of the new series of cultivars called the ‘Music Collection’ bred by Dutch De Jong Plant PV.
Hydrangea Blue Boogie Woogie has glossy, oval mid-green foliage that emerges in early spring on bare branches and is followed by an abundance of deep blue rounded blooms. These eye-catching blue flowers are rich, deeply coloured and bred to bloom from June to September.
The Music Collection is pest and disease-free, long flowering and a must for hydrangea lovers. Blue Boogie Woogie is the deepest blue of the series.
Height and Spread of Hydrangea Macrophylla Music Blue Boogie Woogie
Hydrangea Blue Boogie Woogie is compact and bushy. It reaches a maximum height and spread of 1.5 metres.
How Hardy Is Hydrangea Macrophylla Music Blue Boogie Woogie
Hydrangea Blue Boogie Woogie is bred for disease resistance so it’s hardier than other species of hydrangea macrophylla. It will survive minus temperatures with well-drained roots and a sheltered position.
How To Use Hydrangea Macrophylla Music Blue Boogie Woogie
Hydrangeas are a good choice for mixed informal flower beds and country cottage style gardens, but new blue Boogie Woogie has such deep shades of blue, it also suits modern townhouses.
The flowers are long-lasting, but once they’ve gone over skeletal dried flowerheads bring structure to a bare winter garden.
Happy in a sheltered border or a well-watered and fed container on a balcony or deck, this stunning blue hydrangea is a vivid talking piece for all types of gardens.
How To Care For Hydrangea Macrophylla Music Blue Boogie Woogie
Hydrangea Blue Boogie Woogie is easy to grow in a partially sunny spot that gets some shade in the afternoon.
Watering is important. In dry spells, you should water your hydrangeas frequently, sometimes several times a week if they are growing in containers. A thick layer of mulch will help trap moisture. If the dry out, hydrangeas wilt and drop their flowerheads.
To keep Boogie Woogie blue, acidic soil is required. Grow it in a container of ericaceous compost if your soil is alkaline. If you have neutral to acidic soil, add pine or bracken compost or aluminium sulfate or potassium alum in September.
You don’t have to prune, but the old flower heads can be removed in spring before new foliage begins to emerge.
