Ginkgo Biloba Fastigiata Selevans is an undemanding deciduous tree with a narrow upright growth habit and striking autumnal colour. It’s a superb choice for small spaces, woodland gardens and wildlife-friendly low maintenance areas.
Ginkgo Biloba is a very ancient conifer species that fed the dinosaurs millions of years ago. Today it only grows wild in China, but there are many varieties of this beautiful low maintenance tree that enjoy a UK garden.
Ginkgo Biloba Fastigiata Selevans is also known as Maidenhair Tree Selvans and was bred to achieve an upright, fastigiate form that reaches skywards with a slim body.
Foliage appears in spring covering the trunk from base to tip in a narrow burst of pretty mid-green. Each leaf is broad and fan-shaped with two lobes that gently hang from the branches on long stems. In autumn, its foliage matures to a brilliant warm yellow that rivals acers and only falls when the frosts arrive.
This is an undemanding tree that’s tolerant of most planting conditions and needs very little if any attention once established. Its tall, narrow form makes it an excellent choice for compact spaces.
Height And Spread of Ginkgo Biloba Fastigiata Selevans
Ginkgo Selevans is slow-growing and will reach 6-8 metres over 20 years.
How Hardy Is Ginkgo Biloba Fastigiata Selevans
Very hardy and able to tolerate minus temperatures in well-drained soils. Once established it copes with drought, pollution, and some coastal sprays. Pests are rarely a problem.
How To Use Ginkgo Biloba Fastigiata Selevans
Maidenhair Tree Selvans is an excellent choice where every inch counts such as compact gardens, borders, and pollution-prone front gardens where its splendid autumn colours are eye-catching. It doesn’t need much attention, so fits well into wildlife-friendly, low maintenance gardens lifting them with colour through early spring to late autumn.
You can use it instead of Italian pencil cypress and tall thin conifers in formal gardens for height with narrow width.
How To Care For Ginkgo Biloba Fastigiata Selevans
Maidenhair Tree Selvans needs very little maintenance once it’s established. It prefers full sun in either sheltered or exposed spots and tolerates the majority of well-drained soils.
Because it was bred to grow upright and narrow pruning isn’t required, however, if you want to remove branches do so in the dormant winter months.
A thick layer of mulch in early spring is appreciated to trap moisture and feed it during the growing season. Be sure to water it well until it’s established.
