Ginkgo Biloba Maidenhair
Ginkgo Biloba, also known as the Maidenhair Tree, is a fascinatingly ancient tree, a deciduous conifer which has much to offer the modern gardener. The unique look of this slow-growing architectural tree is complemented by its attractive autumn foliage, making it a great choice for a garden where it has room to grow. Our single and mutli-stemmed specimens will create a large statement in your landscape!
It is believed that Ginkgo Biloba is the oldest surviving tree species on the planet, with fossil records showing that it grew millions of years ago in various locations around the globe. In more recent times this deciduous conifer has been native to China, where it is the national tree. Ginkgo Biloba has been cultivated in the UK since the mid-1700’s. It has distinctive bright green bi-lobed leaves, up to 12 cm in width and fan-shaped, which turn a glowing, clear shade of yellow in the autumn for a brilliant show.
Hardy throughout the UK and across continental Europe, Ginkgo Biloba will grow to a height of more than 12 metres and spread of 4-8 metres in 20 to 50 years, and can keep growing to reach a mature height of 25 metres. It has a conical upright habit when young becoming more irregular with age. There are centuries-old examples of these trees still growing in locations around the world. This is a tree you plant not just for yourself, but for future generations! Our specimens are multi-stemmed, creating a clump effect with just one tree.
Plant Ginkgo Biloba in full sun in an exposed or sheltered position in any well-drained soil. Tolerant of salt, it will do well in coastal regions, and as it is highly tolerant of pollution, it makes an excellent specimen tree in a city garden where it will have room to spread. Deer will leave Ginkgo Biloba alone, so it can be planted without worries on a country property. This ancient tree is resistant to pests and diseases, making it an ideal low-maintenance tree!
Maidenhair Tree should be sited with a view to its eventual large size, even if that will not happen for many years. In the meantime, its attractive foliage and autumn colour will make it worth taking that extra effort! It’s excellent as a focal point in a large lawn, or as a street tree, as it does not mind the hot dry conditions that can occur with pavement.
Maidenhair Tree is a unique tree which promises to live not just for your lifetime, but for that of future generations.
