Fagus Orientalis Iskander (Oriental Beech) is a large beech tree with wide green leaves. It’s more fastigiate than other beeches and although it’s deciduous its old leaves remain on the branches until new spring leaves dislodge them.
Originating from Japan, Fagus Orientalis Iskander is better known as an oriental beech. It’s a tall tree differing from Common Beech because it naturally grows in an upright, columnar shape. This fastigiate nature makes it particularly suitable for medium-sized gardens in need of architectural height without spread.
Its dark green leaves are larger than common beech. Foliage emerges in pale green in spring, darkens to deep green across the summer, and turns a beautiful coppery butter-yellow in autumn. Like hornbeam trees, its autumn-coloured foliage remains on its branches until new spring foliage unfurls.
Height and Spread of Fagus Orientalis Iskander
Oriental beech reaches 20 metres tall, but its canopy spreads just six metres wide.
How Hardy is Fagus Orientalis Iskander
Fagus Orientalis Iskander is hardy in the UK down to minus temperatures if its roots are well drained. It withstands drought once established and copes with pollution too.
How To Use Fagus Orientalis Iskander
Oriental beech is a columnar, architectural shape that brings instant impact to gardens needing height without spread. Because it’s canopy only reaches six metre wide on a tall single grey trunk, it’s ideal for medium sized gardens.
Use its year-round foliage to create shade, block out neighbours, or disguise an ugly feature. This tree brings winter interest and architectural merit to urban and country gardens.
How To Care For Fagus Orientalis Iskander
Oriental beech is easy to grow and care for. Choose a sunny spot in well-drained fertile soil and it will flourish.
As with all new trees, Fagus Orientalis Iskander needs lots of water to establish a strong root system. Use a whole can of water every day for the first few weeks and then at least twice a week thereafter until you see new growth. Give young trees plenty of water in hot spells and be sure to mulch the roots with well-rotted organic matter each year to trap moisture and provide nutrients for healthy growth.
There’s no need to prune this beautiful tree because it naturally holds its upright fastigiate shape. You can remove any damaged or broken branches in the dormant winter months if necessary.
