Compact and robust, this flowering shrub is a perfect candidate for drier gardens, as it doesn’t mind minimal, infrequent watering.
In the summer, clusters of papery, magenta flowers unfold. Each of the yellow-centered blossoms lasts only a day, before being replaced a new flower, creating a profuse display of bright flowers that persists for weeks on end. When Cistus Pulverulentus Sunset isn’t in bloom, sage green, wavy leaves provide interest throughout the year.
A natural hybrid, Rock Rose Sunset is native to the Mediterranean and thrives in milder climates. Considering its native habitat, it doesn’t come as a surprise that this evergreen shrub prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Adaptable to most types of soils, even if they’re poor, Rock Rose Sunset is not bothered by salt spray, making it a great choice for coastal gardens. This specific variety of Rock Rose needs very little watering, and it’s tolerant to drought once established.
Although fully hardy in Britain and Ireland, Cistus Pulverulentus Sunset will welcome being sheltered if the temperatures drop below -10 degrees. Tough and adaptable, Rock Rose Sunset is not prone to any diseases or affected by pests. Its remarkable qualities and attractive features won this sturdy plant the renowned Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Royal Horticultural Society .
The spreading, bushy habit of this evergreen shrub requires no extensive clipping or trimming to keep its lovely shape. In fact, Rock Rose Sunset does not appreciate hard pruning at all, so it’s best left untouched, aside from the occasional removal of dead and damaged stems. Forming a compact mound as it matures, this evergreen shrub can grow to be around 60 centimetres tall and up to 120 centimetres wide.
Graceful and versatile, Sunset variety of Rock Rose can be used as a ground cover, a part of a flowering shrub border or to brighten banks and slopes. They can be planted en masse, creating a border with year-round interest and vivid summer flowers, or combined with taller flowering shrubs as a front row plant. Low-growing and low-spreading, Rock Rose Sunset also works great for underplanting trees, especially when combined with drought-tolerant, evergreen conifers ( e.g. Juniper).
