Berberis Red Rocket - botanical name is Berberis Thunbergii f.atropurpurea and is also commonly known Japanese Barberry.
This attractive deciduous, fastigiate, shrub has striking foliage colours throughout the season. Starting with pinkish purple new leaf growth in Spring, which deepens to a warm bronze during the summer, before finally turning fire engine red in the autumn. Japanese Barberry is a medium sized shrub that brings colour to the herbaceous border and is also very useful as a low growing hedge. The spiny branches make this a super choice for beefing up a security hedge around your boundary.
Berberis foliage grows densely and will produce pale lemon flowers in the summer, followed by deep red berries that are enjoyed by birds and other wild creatures.

Growing Tips: Berberis Thunbergii Red Rocket is very hardy and easy to grow and maintain in any soil, just be aware that for the best display of fruits and autumn colour it's best to choose a sunny position. A light prune at the end of the season should suffice, Berberis Red Rocket will happily grow in both sheltered and exposed areas and will do well in coastal locations. Grown mainly for its colourful foliage, this is one of our most popular red or purple leaved shrubs.
