Cercis Canadensis Merlot or Eastern Redbud Merlot
The Cercis Canadensis or Eastern Redbuds are popular deciduous garden shrubs with both flowering and foliage interest, known for their large heart-shaped colourful leaves and autumn colour. The Eastern Redbuds are native to North America.
The Merlot Redbud variety is a highly decorative and striking small tree and is a profuse bloomer. In early spring, usually before the brightly coloured foliage emerges, pretty violet flower buds open into masses of deep purple flowers all along the bare branches in striking clusters. The flowers attract pollinators.
As the new foliage emerges, it is a dark purple in colour. It then matures to deep red, turning green for the summer before displaying orange and reds of autumn. The leaves themselves have the hallmark heart shape and are large measuring 12 cm across. Merlot gets its name from the colour of the leaves which are said to resemble the colour of the eponymous wine.
This variety - Cercis Canadensis Merlot – is considered to have a high level of drought and heat tolerance, more so than other Redbud varieties such as Cercis Canadensis Ruby Falls. In term of origins, Cercis Canadensis Merlot was bred in North Carolina USA as a hybrid of the varieties Texas White and Cercis Canadensis Forest Pansy.
In terms of botanical name, this variety is synonymous with Cercis Canadensis var. Texensis Merlot.

How to Care for Cercis Canadensis Merlot
The Merlot Redbud likes a sunny position ideally but also does well in partial shade. It does best when planted in a south or west-facing aspect. Once planted, its best not to move it as Redbuds don’t like to be disturbed as they get older.
Pruning can be done after flowering to remove any deadwood.
