Azalea Royal Command is a superb, deciduous azalea from the Exbury breeders. Exbury Azaleas are a selection of azaleas developed by Lionel De Rothschild at his world-famous Exbury Estate. Development of these hybrids began at Knaphill in Surrey in the mid 1800’s at the nursery of Anthony Waterer and later continued at the Exbury Estate. Collectively these hybrids are referred to as Knaphill (Exbury).
These hardy azaleas were developed for their magnificent and flamboyant flowers which can reach 10 cm in diameter as well as their elegant forms which in the case of Azalea Royal Command, can reach 2 metres over 10 years.
Azalea Royal Command is a late flowering azalea, flowering from May and sometimes in June, thereby nicely prolonging the azalea flowering season. It produces large deep orange-red flowers which will create quite a show in your garden and are deeply fragrant. In terms of growth habit, Royal Command is tall but has an attractive bushy (rather than leggy) shape.
The autumn colour change of deciduous azaleas is well known for being really colourful and one plant can produce wonderful shades of yellow, orange and red.
Azalea Royal Command is resistant to mildew. As with all azaleas, it prefers acidic soil.
Here at Paramount Plants, we have gone out of our way to find a selection of azaleas that are easy to grow and flower reliably (and spectacularly) each and every year. We also have one of the most mature selections available from any grower in the UK. These are great plants to create an instant effect in your garden or on your patio and really produce wonderful displays for a mixed borders or your patio pot collection.
