If you’re looking for the ideal ground cover in that shady spot of your garden or yard, this evergreen ground cover plant might be just what you need. The Ajuga Reptans Burgundy Glow, also called Bugle Burgundy Glow, is a wonderful low grower that produces a carpet of tri-coloured foliage with a variegated mixture of white, cream, and green enhanced further with blotches of burgundy red in the leaves. It sends a perky, blue flower spike in late spring through early summer that highlights a nice blend of colours across the landscape.
Ajuga Reptans Burgundy Glow is tolerant of several soil situations, slightly acidic or normal pHs are fine. It tolerates most soils, with the exception of very wet conditions. Ideally, the soil should be fertile for best results. It will grow from full sun to full shade, but given its preferences, it would like to be in a more shady position. Too much sun can cause scorch. It’s extremely hardy and quickly forms a dense carpet-type mat across the soil with its lush waxy leaves. It is tolerant of seaside locations and salty winds and a moderate level of foot traffic, within reason. Burgundy Glow makes for an excellent front of border position.
Bugle Burgundy Glow attracts hummingbirds and is resistant to deer and rabbits, making it also a good choice in your country gardens or that shady spot where you’d like some colour and greenery. Considered a hardy ground cover, it is Hardy to Zone H7 in the UK and Ireland. It will grow to about 15 cm in ultimate height, and ultimate spread of about 45 cm in the course of 2-5 years. It spreads well, and could be considered invasive as a result. Best locations include banks and slopes; as a low maintenance flower border; in beds as a ground cover; or use it in cottage and informal gardens. It also could be a nice addition to a native planting or in wildlife gardens.
Considered a good choice for beginners, this evergreen perennial Ajuga Reptans Burgundy Glow is an easy plant to grow and manage. If you’d like, you can remove the spent flowers with hedge shears or a string trimmer in larger areas to accentuate the foliage after bloom is finished. So if you’re looking for an easy grower, perhaps along the edge of a woodland or in a partial shade position that puts out a lovely flower in late spring and early summer with an interesting foliage, have a go with this winner!
