Acer Platanoides Emerald Queen, or Norway Maple Emerald Queen, is an excellent choice where you want a fast-growing large shade tree which will tolerate a wide range of growing conditions. This Norway Maple cultivar will provide a long season of interest, from early spring to late autumn!
While Norway Maples are native to northern Europe, they are popular landscaping trees around the world. The cultivar Acer Platanoides Emerald Queen was selected in 1959 in Oregon, USA. In April, the attractive yellow flowers emerge before the foliage on bare branches, giving bees and butterflies a valuable early source of nectar. The flowers are then complemented by the bronze-red young leaves in the familiar maple leaf shape, which mature to a deep glossy green in summer, and then a bright yellow-orange in autumn. The flowers of Norway Maple Emerald Queen are followed by winged green fruits or samaras, which will attract birds and add visual interest into the autumn.
Hardy throughout the UK and across continental Europe, Acer Platanoides Emerald Queen will grow to a mature height of 20 metres and spread of 18 metres in 20 to 50 years. Its crown starts out in a narrow shape, but broadens into a full, rounded crown as the tree matures. Choose planting locations carefully, as the shallow root system will interfere with pavement and grass growth, and Norway Maple Emerald Queen requires considerable space for its eventual large size. This is a tree which will last for more than 100 years!
Plant Acer Platanoides Emerald Queen in full sun or partial shade in an exposed or sheltered position in any moist but well-drained soil. Once it is established it will withstand periods of drought. Tolerant of sea winds, it is suitable for use in coastal regions, and it is highly tolerant of pollution, making it perfect for city gardens. As it is also deer-resistant, Norway Maple Emerald Queen can be grown on country properties without special protection.
Acer Platanoides Emerald Queen makes an excellent low-maintenance shade tree for larger gardens; one specimen would be a good focal point in a larger lawn, where the dense foliage growth of summer would provide considerable shade.
Acer Platanoides Emerald Queen is deservedly a favourite where reliable shade and colourful foliage is desired; it will grow in a variety of soils and climates, and provide ornamental interest for generations! Other Norway Maple clutivars include for example the variegated Acer Platanoides Drummondii, Acer Platanoides Royal Red which has red foliage and Acer Platanoides Globosum which has a naturally rounded growth habit.
