Aesculus Mutabilis Induta, also called Aesculus Mutabilis Rosea Nana, or Induta Dwarf Apricot Flowered Chestnut, is a different way to bring the decorative horse chestnut into your landscape. This unique dwarf horse chestnut tree will fit into the smallest garden.
Horse chestnuts are native to the south-eastern United States, and the dwarf Aesculus Mutabilis Induta was bred as a hybrid in Germany in 1905, but has not been widely grown. However, it has many desirable characteristics. The long, narrow leaflets grow up to 20 cm long. They are bronze when they first emerge, changing to blue-green with a hairy pale green underside, and then brown-orange in autumn. In May and June, tall upright panicles of small flowers in shades of salmon pink, cream and orange generously cover the crown, attracting bees and butterflies to the garden. Since this hybrid does not set fruit, you do not even have to worry about cleaning up the horse chestnuts in autumn!
Hardy throughout the UK and continental Europe, Aesculus Mutabilis Induta will grow to a mature height and spread of just 3 metres in 10 years. No pruning is required to maintain the attractive rounded shape of this dwarf tree’s crown. Plant Aesculus Mutabilis Induta in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered or exposed position in any moist but well-drained soil with an acid or neutral pH. Moderately tolerant of salt, it can be planted in coastal regions, and it is also tolerant of pollution, making it a good choice for small city gardens. It is deer and rabbit resistant, so does not need special protection on country properties.
Aesculus Mutabilis Induta is such a compact size that it will fit into very small gardens with ease! This little tree can be grown in a container with no difficulty, and will do well on a roof terrace, balcony, or patio garden. It can be planted towards the back of a mixed border, where it will contribute not only its fragrant flowers, but also summer shade for plants growing beneath. Aesculus Mutabilis Induta also fits in well in wildlife or woodland gardens.
Aesculus Mutabilis Induta is a lovely small standard tree which can find a home in your garden, no matter how small your space is!
