Albizia Julibrissin Evey’s Pride is a new variety of the Persian Silk Tree also known as the Chocolate Tree. It’s dark, burgundy coloured foliage is finely dissected with fern-like leaves. Its fragrant flowers are creamy pink to purplish in colour and have a fuzzy, feathery texture that flows with the breeze and adds a beautiful tropical or Mediterranean feel to the landscape. Its flowers emerge and bloom profusely when the tree is young, typically in mid through late summer. Albizia is one of the last trees to leaf out in the spring. Initially, the leaves have a bronze-green tint before changing over to their signature deep, rich, purple wine colour.
Classified as a deciduous tree or large shrub, the Albizia julibrissin Evy’s Pride can be managed at a more compact height in your smaller garden spaces with occasional and proper pruning. It grows to a height of 4 – 8 metres, and a width of 5 m. It fits well in patio pots, beds, borders, or all on its own, as a free standing focal point.
Evy’s pride is even better suited to UK climate than historical introductions of this ornamental tree. With improved cold-tolerance, Evey’s Pride can tolerate temperatures down to -8C (Hardiness Zone H2). Other improvements include a more free branching growth habit with darker, more profuse pink flowers.
The Albizia genus originated in regions which include Iran (Persia) and the Republic of Azerbaijan to China and Korea. It received its name after Filippo degli Albizzi, an Italian nobleman who first introduced it in Europe during the mid-18th century. Albizia is a member of the Fabaceae family.
The Persian Silk tree is known to repel deer while their flower fragrance is a magnet to birds and butterflies! It instantly will catch your eye when you make it a feature of your landscape, garden, or patio and its scent will steal your heart.
Best planted in well-drained soil without too much lime, select a warm sheltered position with moderate to full sun exposure so as to have the greatest success with Evy’s Pride. A full sun exposure brings out its best colour.
Chocolate Tree Evey's Pride is a beautiful addition will impact your garden straight away this summer!
