Pyracanta or the 'Firethorns' are related to cotoneaster but are easily indentifiable by their thorny branches and toothen leaves. They are often grown as wall-shrubs where they can reach heights of up to 5 M tall. Equally, they can be grown as specimen shrubs. In addition to their profuse summer-flowering, the Firethorns are renowned for their red, yellow or orange berries produced in abundance in the autumn / winter months.
This variery Pyracantha Angustifolia also known as the Narrow Leaf Firethorn is a popular, medium-sized evergreen shrub. It originated in Western China. It produces masses of hawthorn-like white flowers in early summer following by red berries in the autumn / winter months. The flowers attract bees and the brightly coloured berries are adored by birds so this is a great plant for bringing wildlife into the garden. Pyracantha Angustifolia has distinct narrlow oblong leaves that are a softer-grey underneath.
Pyracantha's have very sharp spines and are often planted against boundary walls as a very effective burglar deterrent or for privacy.
It is relatively fast growing shrub and they can easily be trained on a frame for flat wall or fence cover without intruding into the garden space. Great for screening in smaller spaces.
