Physocarpus Opulifolius Amber Jubilee or Nine Bark Amber Jubilee
Bold and colourful, Physocarpus Opulifolius Amber Jubilee is a variety of Nine Bark, treasured for its showy features. Easy to grow and to care for, this vigorous shrub is ideally suited for mixed shrub borders and hedging.

The leaves of this eye-catching cultivar unfold gold and reddish-orange, maturing to rich green with yellow veins during the summer. In the autumn, the palmately lobed leaves turn to stunning shades of purple. Borne in dense, spirea-like clusters, the flowers appear on the stems in the early summer. The 5-petaled and small white flowers, sometimes tinged pink, are followed by decorative reddish-green fruit. During winter, the unusual peeling bark provides interest.

Nine Bark Amber Jubilee is a vigorous mid-sized shrub that thrives in various growing conditions. For best results, grow this cultivar in neutral to acidic, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil, in full sun to partial shade. Tough and robust, this United States native is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. Physocarpus Opulifolius Amber Jubilee won’t be bothered by frost or cold weather, even if the temperatures drop 20 degrees below zero. Considered pest and disease free.

As it matures, Nine Bark Amber Jubilee can achieve the maximum size of 1.5 to 2.5 metres high and across, which makes this ornamental shrub a great candidate for small gardens. Pruning should be done during the plant’s dormant season, removing the old or dead branches to encourage young growth. This cultivar can be hard pruned after the flowering season ends.

Bred in Canada, this striking hybrid is a result of a cross between Physocarpus Opulifolius varieties Monlo and Dart’s Gold. Although the noteworthy characteristics of both parents remain, this cultivar’s features are quite unique. With a splendid transition of various foliage colours throughout the seasons, Nine Bark Amber Jubilee is quite comfortable in the spotlight. Grow it in containers for adding interest to patios and balconies, or plant en masse for a showy hedge. If planted in a mixed shrub border, this cultivar should be paired with evergreen cultivars that would further enhance its vivid foliage.

If you’re looking for more decorative shrubs, take a look at our selection of attractive evergreen and deciduous cultivars, including varieties such as Hippophae Rhamnoides Sea Buckthorn, Ceanothus Cascade or Ceanothus Thyrsiflorus Repens.
