Upright Hawthorn Pleached Crataegus Monogyna Stricta
Pleached Upright Hawthorn also known as Pleached Crataegus Monogyna Stricta, is a tough, deciduous tree in pleached form. It is perfect for use as a screening tree in low maintenance wildlife gardens. Upright Hawthorn is one of the toughest trees around in the UK. This version is a cultivar of our native common hawthorn that’s seen growing in hedges and fields across the UK. It’s been bred to grow upright in a dense fastigiated form that reaches for the sky.
Upright Hawthorn Pleached tree has recognisable lobed hawthorn foliage that emerges pale green and matures into autumnal tones of yellow and orange as winter approaches. In the spring months, this hawthorn variety produces masses of small white scented blossom that’s loved by our native pollinators. Once pollinated, blossom matures into fruits known as ‘haws’ that ripe to a glorious deep red and attract birds. Our pleached upright hawthorn trees have clear stems and the crowns are trained flat on square bamboo supports. As the trees mature the crowns will fill out into a cube.
Height And Spread of Upright Hawthorn Pleached
Hawthorn Stricta Pleached will reach a maximum height of ten metres and three metres wide if left untrimmed, but you can restrict its growth with twice-yearly pruning. It has a columnar habit with erect branches.
How Hardy Is Upright Hawthorn Pleached
Pleached Crataegus Monogyna Stricta is a cultivar of our native hawthorn and is fully hardy when grown in well-drained soil. It copes with windy and exposed locations, heat, salty coastal sprays, and has good pest resistance too.
How To Use Upright Hawthorn Pleached
Pleached Crataegus Monogyna Stricta creates a ‘hedge on stilts’ screen against neighbours. It suits compact gardens and brings lots of colourful interest throughout the seasons.
Pleached trees have been used for hundreds of years in formal gardens but have become popular in small modern gardens as their clear stems leave room in compact spaces and their cubed crowns form a contemporary shape. These Upright Hawthorn trees are shaped as deciduous pleached trees which means it will lose leaves in the winter, but in summer it has a dense canopy that easily blocks out the neighbour’s upstairs windows and provides shade in a hot garden.
We also have Crataegus Monogyna as a full standard version.
How To Care For Upright Hawthorn Pleached
This is a very hardy low-maintenance tree that grows in the majority of soils if its roots are well-drained. To keep the pleached form it will need a twice-yearly trim tying in new stems or removing them if they outgrow the bamboo frame. There is no need to remove the bamboo framework unless you want to. It’s best to wait until the branches are sufficiently mature to maintain the shape.
Water well until established and add a thick layer of mulch to the roots once a year to provide nutrients through the growing season.
