These Tilia tomentosa Brabant, or Silver Lime Brabant trees are shaped as multi-stem trees. This attractive landscape tree is much appreciated for its interesting foliage and fragrant flowers, and has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Tilia tomentosa is native to south-west Asia. A small to mid-sized deciduous tree, Tilia tomentosa Brabant was developed in the Netherlands and introduced to the UK in the 1970s and has been a favourite ever since. The rounded, dark-green leaves have an interesting felted, white underside which adds visual interest, especially when there is a breeze blowing. In July, drooping clusters of creamy white flowers appear, which are irresistible to bees, which pollinate the flowers, resulting in 8-10 cm long seed pods in autumn. The leaves of Silver Lime Brabant turn a brilliant yellow for a splendid finish to the garden year.
Hardy across most of the UK, Tilia tomentosa Brabant will grow to a height of 10 metres and spread of 6 metres after 25 years, and possibly reaching an eventual height of 20 metres and spread of 10-15 metres. Our multi-stem specimens can be pruned back to maintain a desired shape and size, or left to grow naturally. Dead or damaged branches can be pruned out in late winter.
Plant Tilia tomentosa Brabant in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position in any moist but well-drained soil with an alkaline to neutral pH. It will do well in consistently moist but not waterlogged soil, and will also tolerate brief periods of drought. Tolerant of salt, Silver Lime Brabant is suitable for planting in coastal regions, and as it is very tolerant of pollution, it is also a good choice for city gardens.
Our multi-stem Tilia tomentosa Brabant trees can be used as individual specimens or in mass plantings to great effect. One planted as a focal point in a large lawn would give a long season of ornamental value. On a large property, a group of Silver Lime Brabant multi-stem trees would be an attractive addition to the landscape.
Our mutli-stem Tilia tomentosa Brabant trees are a long-lived landscape tree which can be left to grow to its eventual large size, or pruned to maintain a smaller size. Either way, the attractive foliage and fragrant flowers make this tree agood choice for UK gardens!
