The Syringa × Hyacinthiflora Lilac hybrids (as opposed to Common Lilacs Syringa Vulgaris) are early flowering Lilacs which originated in France in the 1870’s. This hybrid was named hyacinthiflora due to the strong resemblance of the lilac flowers to hyacinths.
Syringa X Hyacinthiflora Esther Staley is a very fine specimen Lilac plant with bright single pink flowers. Flowering around the end of April through to May, Esther Staley has wonderful new bronze coloured foliage at first that matures to a mid-green. Syringa x Hyacinthiflora Esther Staley is an easy plant to grow. Its reliability is such that the RHS have deemed it deserving of an Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
The Esther Staley Lilac is very hardy and will grow on any kind of soil. For the best flower display position in full sun and de-head spent flowers promptly. Syringa Esther Staley is capable of growing to approx. 4 metres.
Syringas (Lilacs) have been prized since the 12th century for their wonderful flower display which are great for bouquets and cut flowers. As a plant Syringa is a perfect choice for a focal point but also works well when planted en masse.
