Syringa josikaea or Hungarian Lilac
Syringa Josikaea is commonly known as the Hungarian Lilac. This is a deciduous shrub producing stunning purple-pink fragrant blossoms in spring. Native to the forests of Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in Hungary and Romania, this lilac species while not so well known, is no less captivating than the more familiar Syringa Vulgaris or common lilac variety. It is a hardy, low-maintenance plant well-suited for temperate climates.

The Hungarian lilac forms a rounded, multi-stemmed shrub that grows densely with upright branches. Its ovate leaves are dark green with a glossy finish, providing a lush backdrop for the vibrant flowers. During late spring to early summer, Syringa josikaea produces clusters of tubular, purple-pink flowers arranged in panicles that measure up to 6 inches long. Unlike other lilacs, its blossoms are subtly aromatic, offering a refined fragrance that is not overpowering. The plant is also appreciated for its ability to retain healthy foliage through the growing season, remaining visually appealing even after flowering has ceased.

Height and Spread of Syringa josikaea
The Hungarian lilac typically reaches a mature height of circa 3 metres with a similar spread.

How Hardy is Syringa josikaea?
Syringa josikaea is exceptionally hardy, tolerating cold winters and mild summers. It is resistant to frost damage and performs well in a variety of soil types, provided they are well-draining.

How To Use Syringa josikaea
The Hungarian lilac is a versatile shrub suitable for a range of garden applications. It works beautifully as a privacy hedge, foundation planting, or in mixed borders. Its fragrant blossoms attract pollinators like butterflies and bees, adding life to the garden. Additionally, its upright form and seasonal interest make it a striking focal point when planted as a specimen shrub.

How To Care For Syringa josikaea
For optimal growth, plant Syringa josikaea in a location that receives full sun, though it can tolerate partial shade. It prefers slightly alkaline, well-drained soil. Water the plant deeply during dry spells, especially in its first few years, to establish strong roots. Prune immediately after flowering to remove spent blooms and maintain its shape; avoid heavy pruning as this can reduce flowering for the next season. Applying a layer of mulch around the base can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. With proper care, this lilac will reward you with years of elegant beauty.
