Its red buds start to emerge from late autumn and last until early spring when they change to white flowers. The flowers then last until late Spring. The rest of the year the evergreen foliage is bushy and dark green.
Why buy this plant? Skimmia is truely a winter-flowering wonder! Low growing and evergreen, this beautiful compact shrub looks at its very best between November and April so it is a great flowering plant for the darkest winter months. Easy to grow and maintain, Skimmia Jap Rubella is happy in partial shade & in a well drained soil. Skimmia are generally among the most popular evergreen low growing shrubs generally reaching max heights of just 1.5 metres and flowering in spring and producing decorative berries in autumn. However, only the female varieties of Skimmia produce berries but generally in order to do so, they require the presence of a male Skimmia nearby. Skimmia Japonica Rubella is a male variety of Skimmia and as such it won’t produce berries. But it is widely acknowledged an excellent pollinator so plant it near a female variety of Skimmia such as Skimmia Japonica Kew White which produces stunning white berries.
An RHS Award of Garden Merit plant.
