Schizophragma Hydrangeoides Windmills is a self-clinging deciduous climber with lush green foliage and white hydrangea-type flowers in summer. It will cover an unattractive vertical surface in part or full shade.
Schizophragma Hydrangeoides is better known as the Japanese Hydrangea Vine. It’s native to Japan and Korea where it grows in the shade of deciduous woodlands. Schizophragma Hydrangeoides Windmills is a cultivar with white flower bracts. It differs from climbing hydrangeas because the sterile outer flowers have one bract rather than four. Its bushy green foliage emerges in spring before the flower bracts appear in summer and fall in a shower of golden yellow hues during late autumn. Japanese Hydrangea Vine Windmills has strong stems that will cling to most surfaces including walls, tree trunks, and fences. It has aerial roots that self-cling, so trellis or wire supports are not required.
This is a lovely lush climber for shady spots that other plants struggle to thrive in.
