Native to western Asia, Lamb’s Ear has been grown in the UK since the 1782, and it is now often found growing in the wild. Anevergreen perennial, Stachys Byzantina Silver Carpet is a sterile cultivar which is grown primarily for its attractive evergreen leaves, as it rarely blooms. The 10 cm long elliptic leaves are soft and velvety to the touch and the colour of Stachys Silver Carpet is in fact the most silver of all the Lamb’s Ear cultivars. If there are any flowers, spikes of silver flowers touched with pink appear in summer.
Stachys Silver Carpet is an extremely tough plant, able to survive even the severest winters across the UK and northern Europe. It will reach a full height of 10-50 cm and spread of 50-100 cm in a period of 2 to 5 years, forming a dense mat. If planting as a ground cover, space plants 30 cm apart. Plants should be divided every 3 or 4 years in early spring.
Stachys Byzantina Silver Carpet needs dry conditions to thrive; if planted in too damp a location it will suffer from rot. Plant your Lamb's Ear Silver Carpet in well-drained sand, loam or chalk soil, in full sun with a south or west aspect, in a sheltered or exposed location. Tolerant of both urban pollution and salt air, it will do well in both cities and coastal regions. Preferring dry to damp, Stachys Silver Carpet is very drought resistant and therefore a great choice for hot, dry spots. Deer and rabbit resistant, it is a natural choice where those animals present a threat to garden plants.
Stachys Silver Carpet can be used in a variety of garden situations as a low-growing ground cover. It is suited to container gardening and can be used to fill in spots in containers under shrubs. In a dry courtyard or gravel garden, Stachys Byzantina Silver Carpet will fill in spots along a pathway or edging a flower bed. It will make a lovely addition around a birdbath or statue, or even growing in a crevice in an old stone wall. As a mass ground cover on a dry bank, it will form a dense, tough mat to choke out any weeds.
Stachys Byzantina Silver Carpet will, for remarkably little maintenance, give you a tough, reliable, drought-tolerant ground cover which will clothe the ground in silver!
